Many years ago, ferrous materials were rare, and were found only as debris of meteorites. Iron and its alloys were used only for accessories, such as cultural items or jewelry. With the beginning of metallurgical processes, initially for processing bronze, iron and its alloys gained importance and began to be used for various applications, such as agricultural machinery.

These are some of the lessons that the STEAM Studio has learned from working with the waterjet on “Wake” and other projects:

The use of nanosecond lasers for joining is unlike conventional welding in that it does not generate a large melt pool, so opportunity for the formation of these unwanted intermetallic phases is inhibited. The spot size is very small (often in the 30μm range), so to make spot welds or linear welds, techniques such as spiraling and beam wobbling are used. The spot size can be easily changed by appropriate selection of beam expanding collimators. The majority of the processing was conducted with our 70W EP-Z lasers with an M2 of <1.6. However, for some applications, it has been found that a broader energy distribution, as offered by the 70W HS-H model with its M2 of 3.0, results in improved joint characteristics.

This .06mm is just a hair’s difference, but use each of the two extreme examples in the same bolt and you’ll feel an obvious change in grip and movement, and likely see the undersized version cut into the edges of the bolt before it begins to turn.
